Go inside Qantas' big birthday bash

First it was Barbie and Ken, then it was a second retro aircraft and now A-list celebrities - Qantas gives the term 'gone all out' new meaning with its 95th birthday celebrations.

First it was Barbie and Ken, then it was a second retro aircraft and now A-list celebrities – Qantas gives the term ‘gone all out’ new meaning with its 95th birthday celebrations.

Celebrations for the big anniversary commenced earlier this year with Qantas rolling out new and fun initiatives to commemorate the milestone.

Among the initiatives was travelling Barbie, which put a smile on some travellers’ faces, while the second Retro Roo aircraft excited others.

However, of the anniversary surprises none were more extravagant or glamorous as the 1,000-guest party held at Hangar 96 at Sydney Domestic Airport over the weekend.

CEO Alan Joyce invited some of the airline’s closest friends to the event including Qantas Ambassador, John Travolta, who flew himself, his wife Kelly Preston and daughter Ella Bleu to the bash in a Challenger Jet.

Also stopping by the big bash was model Jessica Hart, Today Show host Lisa Wilkinson, NSW Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres and entertainer Courtney Act.

Wendy Miles, the daughter of Qantas co-founder Sir Wilmot Hudson Fysh, also made an appearance along with Qantas Celebrity Chef, Neil Perry; Qantas Uniform Designer, Martin Grant; Qantas Trend Consultant, Jessica Hart; and Qantas Digital Consultant, Nicole Warne.

Attendees walked the red carpet before enjoying a drink at the Qantas business lounge-styled cocktail bar. All 1,000 attendees were treated to a Neil Perry-catered three-course dinner as well as ringside seats on taxiing jets plus a special performance by Australian musician, Bernard Fanning.
