Jetstar launches new Vic-Qld route today, the first for any airline

Victorians looking to swap the freezing temps for warmer climes (and those wanting to do the opposite), have a new way to do so with the launch today of Jetstar’s Melbourne-Hervey Bay service.

The new flights will operate three times per week and mark the first time these two destinations have ever been directly linked.

Utilising its A320 aircraft, the low-cost carrier will offer over 1,100 seats per week between Melbourne and the Fraser Coast port.

“We know how much Melbournians love to head North, especially during winter, and we’re looking forward to giving them direct access to a new Queensland destination on our low fares network,” Jetstar Executive Manager, Customer, Jenn Armor said.

“Hervey Bay is a bit of a hidden gem for Victorians as there’s never been a direct flight from Melbourne to this part Queensland.

“Aside from being the gateway to K’gari, Hervey Bay offers pristine, calm beaches that are perfect for young families, access to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, and it’s one of the best places in the world for whale encounters.”

Launched in partnership with the Fraser Coast Council, the new service will see fares as low as $151 one-way.

“We’re excited about the opportunities this new route brings. It’s more than just flights; it’s about forging new connections, exploring new destinations, and inviting southerners to experience the Fraser Coast while giving us the chance to enjoy everything Melbourne has to offer,” Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor, Cr Paul Truscott said.

“The introduction of direct flights from Melbourne to Hervey Bay by Jetstar will significantly boost tourism, providing easier access for visitors and fostering economic growth in the Fraser Coast region.”

Fraser Coast Tourism and Events General Manager, Martin Simons added, There are not too many places in Australia where you can step off a two and a half hour flight and in a short time be enjoying pristine, world-class wilderness”.

“The Fraser Coast region, home to World Heritage Listed K’gari and nearby to Lady Elliot Island on the Southern Great Barrier Reef has kilometres of unspoiled beaches, walking tracks through rainforest, crystal clear freshwater lakes and amazing reef diving,” he said.

Earlier this month, Jetstar launched its new ready-made flight bundles, ranging from the basic Starter Plus to the Flex Plus Bundle with different inclusions, flexibility and Qantas Points and rewards earning capacity.

In May, Jetstar commemorated its first-ever flight – from Newcastle to Melbourne – marking the historic journey with some of the original pilots, crew and passengers on board.
