A wave of new tourists started sweeping into the north of Western Australia this week via SilkAir’s new trial non-stop services from Singapore.
Singapore Airline’s regional off-shoot, SilkAir, launched the first of four trial services into Broome International Airport this week, making it the first international flight for the area in almost two decades.
Broome’s tourism leaders along with Singaporean welcomed the flight, saying it gives Asian travellers more options into Australia and contributes to the development of the resort town, Perth Now reported.
“The potential for this route is enormous and has potential to be bigger than the direct Perth to London flights.”
Harold Tracey, Broome Shire President
MI892 was the first of four trial flights from Singapore to Broome on the 162-seater Boeing 737-800.
The SilkAir flight takes a total of four hours to complete and aims at exposing the resort area to the Asian market.
In addition to welcoming new tourists from Asia, Broome’s leader can also expect a rush of visitors from Perth after Qantas confirmed a permanent fare reduction on its weekend service into Broome, in a bid to drive more tourism into the north of WA.
The announcement was made last week, with Qantas offering $179 one-way services from WA’s capital. Click here for more information.
