A few weeks ago, Qantas put a call out to its social media followers to help name its eight specially-designed 787 Dreamliners and of course, the internet had thousands of ideas.
According to Qantas, in less than two weeks, thousands of entries were submitted, with some suggesting the planes be named after local wildlife, others saw the chance to name them after Aussie icons and then there were a few, sorry, a lot who thought one of the aircraft should be named after a breakfast spread.
The Flying Kangaroo has since sifted through the submissions and selected its 20 favourites, which happen to include the name of a salty, bitter yeast extract.
That’s right, Vegemite is among the list of 20 potential names.
Why, you ask? Well as the song goes, it’s “because we love our Vegemite” and “we all adore our Vegemite”, including Hugh Jackman who happens to be Qantas’ Global Ambassador.

Also making the list is Australia’s favourite kangaroo (aside from Qantas), Skippy, as well as Uluru, Great Ocean Road, Kokoda, Great Southern Land, Great Barrier Reef and True Blue.
Sadly, KarryOn’s suggestions didn’t make the cut (still rooting for The Dundee), although Don Bradman did, along with , , , , , , (aww cute!) and
Qantas is now asking social media users to help choose the final eight by voting on the carrier’s website.
The final eight will be announced on 7 June.
