Perth Airport is soaring high after recording another post-pandemic milestone with 16.1 million travellers passing through its terminals in FY24 as the WA hub actively attracts airlines and services through aviation agreements and government backing.
Its highest-ever annual passenger numbers surpass the previous FY14 record of 14.9 million and include six million-plus regional flyers (bolstered by the FIFO market) and 11.7 million combined interstate and regional pax – both the highest recorded at Perth Airport.
In FY24, the WA aviation hub also reported 4.3 million international passengers (its fourth-highest recorded level) and 5.7 million interstate passengers (its eighth-highest).
Qantas and Perth Airport recently announced a landmark 12-year agreement to unlock the airline’s western hub, adding an extra 4.4 million seats to and from PER by 2031. This includes the launch of direct Perth-Paris flights on 14 July 2024 and the QF fleet renewal program.
Reflecting on the post-pandemic rebound, Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters said the numbers highlighted the work to attract airlines to Western Australia, such as the return of South African Airways, Thai Airways and China Southern along with increased services.
“We have added more than 10 million passengers since FY21 and in doing so have easily broken a record that has stood for a decade,” he said.
“We expect this growth to continue as airlines continue to show their confidence in the Western Australian market.”
PER has invested more than $5 billion in new infrastructure to provide additional capacity for airline partners.
In the coming decade, works include an international terminal expansion, new domestic terminal facilities, a parallel runway, two multi-story carparks and Perth Airport’s first onsite hotel.
