Everyone is on social media these days, including the major airlines. But some do better than others. Here are the top five airlines that are using social media to kill it online and off.

Everyone is on social media these days, including the major airlines. But some do better than others. Here are the top five airlines that are using social media to kill it online and off.

Emirates

EK-social-media

The first airline EVER to reach 1 million Instagram followers, Emirates are used to being number one. They reached this epic milestone, which positions them as the largest transportation brand on the popular photo and video-sharing platform, only a few days ago on 26 January 2016.

Combine that with the airlines’ recent announcement of a second A380 service to Perth, and its sponsorship yet again at the Australian Open, and there really is no stopping Emirates in 2016.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish

Turkey’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines, have continually taken out top awards at the SimpliFlying Awards – the longest running awards dedicated to recognising the best social media campaigns and practices in the aviation industry.

In 2015 they placed in the top 3 airlines in the ‘Branding’ category, and in 2014 they took out the ‘Most Creative Campaign by Airline’ title for their Kobe vs Messi selfie-shootout campaign.

Air New Zealand

NZ

The men in black are back on the awards podium after placing in the ‘Overall in Asia Pacific’ category at the SimpliFlying Awards in 2015. This award recognises Air New Zealand’s efforts across all social media channels in the region.

And this isn’t surprising, given the airlines reputation in using the power of social media to build brand awareness. Take that recent video posted on social of the homecoming haka on the runway, for example.

American Airlines

AA

When it comes to responding to tweets on Twitter, American Airlines have led the pack – according to a recent study.

The team over at AA – who will partner with Qantas for at least another five years – responded to 36 percent of all mentions on Twitter, blowing other airlines out of the water. America, hell yeah!

Etihad Airways

EY

Last but not least, this Abu Dhabi-based airline placed in the top 3 (along with Virgin America) for delivering exceptional customer service on social media at last year’s SimpliFlying Awards.

The award was given to Etihad in recognition of its quick and consistent action in responding to customer comments/enquiries on social media, and after taking out the Business Airline of the Year at the 2016 Business Travel Awards, they don’t look like they’re slacking off anytime soon.
