On location: Avalon Alegria christened on the banks of the beautiful Pinhao

Brand new and purpose-built for the Douro River, the stunning Avalon Alegria was christened on Thursday 28 March on the banks of beautiful Pinhao in Portugal – and Karryon’s Dani Tuffield was there to soak in the moment.

Surrounded by rolling green hills and picturesque vineyards, not even the rain could dampen our spirits as comedian Cheri Oteri officially named the ship with a traditional champagne smashing ceremony.

Speaking of her godmother duties, Cheri Oteri said, “I am beyond excited to have the honour of godmother to the beautiful Avalon Alegria. Taking a river cruise with a constant scenic view of rich landscapes and picturesque villages is the best way to holiday I could ever imagine”.

“I can’t wait to sightsee with my fellow passengers in different ports while appreciating the spectacular waterways that help support the surrounding eco-system we all get to enjoy,” she said.

Cheri took her role very seriously and was overwhelmed with gratitude stating that “it has been one of the best and memorable moments of my life”.

Cheri had a blast and joined in on all that Avalon offers on and off-board – including dancing the night away after the incredible firework display we watched from the sky deck after the official ceremony was completed.

The Avalon Alegria has been built in Portugal specifically for the Douro River, departing from Porto on an 8 night itinerary through beautiful and historical towns such as Regua, Pinhao and Pochino.

Alegria means happiness in Portuguese and so having Cheri who has brought so much joy and laughter to people was an obvious choice.

As the Avalon Alegria will remain in Portugal, Avalon Waterways has brought many aspects of the region into the ship. From the majority of local staff and crew to the food and design onboard, you feel immersed in the destination.

Although slightly smaller than other Avalon ships, to fit the specifications of the locks, you definitely do not feel compromised in space at all.

Onboard the Avalon Alegria, the view is paramount and you feel it in all areas, from the 14 Deluxe Staterooms and 37 Panorama Suites to restaurants, lounges and the sky deck with a swimming pool.

A Panorama Suite, a highlight on all of Avalon’s Suite Ships, the wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows open 11-feet wide and lying in bed watching the world go by is a perfect way to start and end your day.

President of Avalon Waterways, Pam Hoffee noted that it is the 20th year anniversary of Avalon Waterways and is thrilled to welcome a brand new destination and ship this year.

“For those lucky enough to join our new ship and crew her inaugural year, hillside vineyards and historic villages await them on an eight-day cruise that begins and ends in Porto,” said Hoffee.

Sales for the 24 season took off and the 25 season is already selling fast. Portugal is a hot destination and a Douro River Cruise is a perfect way to see and do it all in style, ease and comfort. Get onboard!

Last year, Avalon Waterways’ Australian Ambassador Melissa Doyle embarked on her second river cruise – the Romantic Rhine – after her first-ever solo journey on the Danube in 2022. Now a self-described river cruise convert, she has some takeaways for those curious about this mode of travel.
