Travel advisors, get ready for school – the CATO Touring Academy is now live. According to the Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO), the new online certification program aims to enhance retail travel agents’ expertise in the land-based touring sector, highlighting the variety and uniqueness of tours available.

Upon completion of the program, CATO expects graduates to be able to tap into the lucrative commission opportunities the industry presents.

“The CATO Touring Academy offers a meticulously structured certification program, tailored to enhance the capabilities of both seasoned travel agents and industry newcomers and ensures agents are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in today’s competitive market,” CATO Managing Director, Brett Jardine said.

The program launched the week after CATO celebrated its 25th anniversary. Read about its big birthday bash here.

How it works

Participants need 200 points from modules and activities to achieve CATO Certification. The program highlights include:

  • Mandatory Modules: 20 points each, covering foundational insights.
  • Elective Modules: 15 points each, allowing tailored education.
  • Brand and Destination Training: 10 points each, provided by CATO members.

Additionally, travel advisors can earn 10 points for participating in CATO Member Familiarisations of five days or more, and completing endorsed CATO member brand training.

The training covers sales techniques, introductions to specific touring styles and product training from various CATO Member brands. CATO says this ensures agents are knowledgeable and skilled in promoting and selling touring products.

In an interview earlier this year when announcing the scheme, Jardine told Karryon, “The tailored e-learning experience will allow people to progress at their own pace, leading to the achievement of CATO Certified status,” Jardine said.

“This demonstrates a level of understanding and credibility and expertise that will set them apart from their competitors.”

In April, Flight Centre was revealed as the formal launch partner and first customer of the new CATO Touring Academy.

The program is now accepting registrations at academy.cato.travel. Agents can enrol for an annual fee of $99.
