Flight Centre will be the formal launch partner and first customer of the new CATO Touring Academy, the Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO) has revealed.

Set to launch on 22 April, the CATO Touring Academy aims to give retail agents and industry newcomers specialised touring sector training through an internationally recognised online training platform – and as its inaugural customer, Flight Centre plans to include the program in its agent training over the next three years.

The partnership between Flight Centre and CATO aims to support the development of the travel agency giant’s frontline staff and ultimately improve travel planning for customers.

“This collaboration epitomises the power of unity within the travel sector, aimed at elevating the overall calibre of travel consultancy services,” CATO Managing Director Brett Jardine said.

“Flight Centre’s steadfast commitment highlights the pivotal role of continuous learning and expertise in shaping the future of travel.”

Andrew Stark, Flight Centre’s Global Managing Director, said teaming up with the CATO Touring Academy just made sense for the company.

“Whether we’re booking group tours through Europe or solo explorations in our own mesmerising backyard, Flight Centre is always seeking avenues to build our industry knowledge and improve our tour offering for customers,” he remarked.

“This alliance enables us to tap into a reservoir of additional experience, ensuring our consultants are equipped with a comprehensive skill-base to offer our customers a powerhouse of tour deals with expert service.”

In an interview with Karryon when announcing the CATO Touring Academy in early March, Jardine said the certification program addressed the travel industry’s critical need for skilled professionals.

“The tailored e-learning experience will allow people to progress at their own pace, leading to the achievement of CATO Certified status,” he said.

“This demonstrates a level of understanding and credibility and expertise that will set them apart from from their competitors.”

Last week, CATO unveiled Travel Agent Day Australia (TADA ’24) – an inaugural event taking place in Melbourne in October – as the latest Platinum Partner to join the council.
