Two people have been confirmed dead and five are still missing after Aqua Expedition’s luxury ship, Aqua Amazon, blew up and sank over the weekend.
The river vessel was docked for a regular re-supply and re-stock when a fire broke out causing an explosion onboard. No passengers were travelling on the ship at the time of the accident, however, four crew members were initially reported missing and several others injured. The number of missing rose on Sunday when one more crew member and two external suppliers were unaccounted for.
In an update from the cruise line’s CEO, Francesco Galli Zugaro, two of the victims have since been identified and recovered, while five more remain to be found.
Another eight staff members were injured during the incident – three are in intensive care and the remaining five are receiving necessary medical attention.
“We are assuring them the best medical treatment possible,” he said.
“We have been in close contact with their families and have been keeping them fully informed of news of their loved ones during this difficult time.”

“Many of the crew have been with me from 2007 when we started. I considered them dear friends, not just employees.”
Zugaro explained that all efforts continue to focus on locating crew as well as identifying the cause of the fire that caused the explosion.
“We are supporting all efforts by the authorities and will continue to do so throughout the process,” he added.
“Our industry partners, guests, families and friends have given me and everyone at Aqua Expeditions the strength and commitment to stay united and face this tragedy together.
“We are overwhelmed with the show of support that is continuing to pour in from all over the world and we will be eternally thankful.
“I, along with our media and marketing teams, will be keeping the industry informed of further developments.”
