Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed Carnival Spirit will continue to sail off Sydney’s coast until Sydney port is reopened.

The 2,500-passenger ship was scheduled to return to Sydney early this morning after a 12-night cruise to the South Pacific.

However, strong winds and heavy rain in the city forced the closure of the local port.

According to the cruise line, the port closure meant the Harbour Pilot was unable to board Spirit – the Harbour Pilot is required to board any cruise ship before it enters Sydney Harbour.

The vessel has since been sailing off the coast of Sydney while it awaits the go ahead to head back to shore.

In a statement, Carnival said it is in close contact with the Port Authority of NSW, however, has confirmed the port will not reopen tonight.
