Celestial vessel: Scenic Eclipse II christened by NASA astronaut

NASA astronaut, oceanographer, geologist and US Navy officer Dr Kathryn Sullivan officially christened the ultra-luxury Discovery Yacht Scenic Eclipse II in a star-studded ceremony in Málaga, Spain on 3 June 2023.

One of the world’s most technologically advanced ultra-luxury yachts, Scenic Eclipse II’s Godmother Dr Kathryn Sullivan christened Scenic’s newest ship in front of VIPs, including Scenic Group Chairman and Founder Glen Moroney.

“I am touched and honoured to be the Scenic Eclipse II’s Godmother,” Dr Sullivan said.

“Seeing the level of ultra-luxury that is possible in what is truly an expedition vessel has me wondering what the Moroneys could do with the rather restrictive confines of the Space Shuttle and the super-cramped environment of the submersible we used to dive the Mariana Trench.”

Mr Moroney said Dr Sullivan’s list of accomplishments was a rarity, making her a natural fit for the exploration possibilities of Scenic Eclipse II.

“The depth of her experiences above our planet and below our seas and her incredible passion for exploration is truly inspiring and what we feel makes her the perfect representation of our newest Scenic Eclipse Discovery Yacht,” he said.

The Discovery Yacht is a custom-built Polar Class 6 vessel but also offers activities for warmer regions from its custom-designed marina, including Tiwal sailing boats, swim platforms, e-bikes, snorkelling, wake-boarding and water-skiing.

In addition to two state-of-the-art six-guest helicopters, Zodiacs, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and other amenities, Scenic Eclipse II will have a next-gen, US-made electric submersible that can accommodate eight.

The ship will visit Greenland, Svalbard and Iceland and the Caribbean on her inaugural sailing.

In 2024 and 2025, she will cruise the Asia Pacific, including NZ, WA’s Kimberley region and Coral Coast, Tahiti, Fiji, Borneo and Japan.
