GO FOR GREEN: Hurtigruten to add three more hybrid-powered expedition ships

Hurtigruten continues to expand its eco-friendly, hybrid fleet, with news that three of their existing ships are going to be converted into hybrid-powered expedition vessels.

Hurtigruten continues to expand its eco-friendly, hybrid fleet, with news that three of their existing ships are going to be converted into hybrid-powered expedition vessels.

It comes following Hurtigruten’s introduction of the world’s first hybrid battery-powered cruise ship, MS Roald Amundsen last month.

Three of the line’s existing ships will have battery packs installed to support their upgraded engines which will “drastically cut emissions”.

The ships will be able to operate using only battery power when docked in ports – cutting emissions to zero.

Once converted, the trio of ships will be re-named before they return to the water on year-round sailings along the Norwegian coast from 2021.

MS Trollfjord, MS Finnmarken and MS Midnatsol will become MS Maud, Otto Sverdup and MS Eirik Raude.

The MS Otto Sverdrup will have battery packs installed during a 2020 shipyard stay, with a letter of intent for the same battery installation on MS Maud and MS Eirik Raude in 2021.

The transformation will also expand to the decor with all cabins and suites will be renovated, new suites to be added, and all public spaces to be redesigned.

The ships will also get a new wellness area with gym, lounge and treatment rooms and Science Centres will be added.

The pool area on MS Otto Sverdrup and outdoor hot tubs on MS Maud and MS Eirik Raude will also be upgraded.

Hurtigruten’s CEO Daniel Skjeldam said the new expedition cruise vessels will enable guests to explore Norway “like never before with all the comforts, facilities and expertise you need for creating a perfect adventure”.

“Combined with ground-breaking green technology, these ships will truly stand out.”
