The world’s only French cruise line will soon also be the world’s only cruise line to have a luxurious electric hybrid icebreaker propelled by liquefied natural gas.
PONANT has placed an order for the first-of-its-kind cruise ship, which will be capable of taking guests to unexplored areas in the polar regions.
Called the Ponant Icebreaker, the unique vessel will be designed by the best international experts, including Aker Arctic who construct the most demanding icebreakers; Wärtsilä also known as the producers of the best Dual Fuel diesel engines on the market; GTT, the supplier of innovative storage technology for LNG fuel; and ABB, a supplier of Azipod Units and electric hybrid structures.
PONANT says the vessel will be delivered in 2021 and will be capable of taking guests to never-before-explored polar regions of the world while minimising impact with the certified and environmentally friendly vessel.
When she arrives, Ponant Icebreaker will have around 135 staterooms, including 68 with patio doors and a private balcony.
She’ll also have a fleet of 16 expedition Zodiac dinghies and room for two onboard helicopters.
Guests will be able to dine at the two panoramic restaurants and a grill restaurant, or unwind in the spacious spa.
Ponant Icebreaker promises to take guests to unexplored areas such as the true geographic North Pole, the Weddell Sea, the Ross Sea and Peter I Island.
