In a major coup for Australian tourism, Marvel has selected Australia to be the backdrop to its third solo Thor movie, Thor: Ragnarok.

In a major coup for Australian tourism, Marvel has selected Australia to be the backdrop to its third solo Thor movie, Thor: Ragnarok.

The movie, scheduled for release in 2017, will be filmed around our shores next year along with an untitled Sir Ridley Scott alien flick.

Location details are yet to be announced, however, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said they would generate around $300 million investment in Australia and create some 3,000 jobs.

“Australia’s creative industries are well placed to take advantage of a growing global economy and I have been actively promoting Australia for the production of major international films.”

“Our high quality facilities, leading industry experts, outstanding creative talent and diverse landscapes have given us an exceptional reputation as a world-class destination.”

The government will invest some $47.25 million to bring the two feature films to Australia, which will be viewed by millions of people around the globe and potentially increase tourism to the country.

“Attracting these two blockbuster films cements Australia’s place as one of the world’s best filming locations,” Minister for Communications and Art Mitch Fifield said.

“Australian crews and actors will also gain the skills and experience to further strengthen our capacity to produce high-quality films for Australian and international audiences.”

Thor: Ragnarok is the third solo film for Marvel’s comic book character, Thor, and will be the 17th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It follows on from the second Thor movie – Thor: The Dark World – which was filmed in London.
