Beach vs city: Where do Aussies want to holiday overseas in 2023 & what do they want?

Close-to-home destinations top Aussie holidaymakers’ travel wish lists this year with the majority keen on overseas trips to New Zealand and Asia-Pacific. Beach getaways also beat out city escapes, appealing to 76 per cent of Aussies.

According to a recent survey by travel insurance provider InsureandGo, an overwhelming 98 per cent of Aussies will travel domestically or internationally this year, which is fantastic news for travel advisors.

Out of more than 1,000 respondents, 37 per cent aim to travel overseas in 2023.

New Zealand topped the global list of destinations for Aussie travellers with more than half (59%) prioritising low-cost holidays close to home.

Asia-Pacific followed with 44 per cent of respondents indicating interest in destinations across Asia and the South Pacific.

This tracks with recent announcements of new airlines and resumed routes to a range of locations across Asia and South Pac, such as Vietjet, Air Vanuatu and Virgin Australia.

The US and Canada saw 35 per cent of Aussie travellers’ interest, while Western Europe (31%) and the UK (30%) rounded out the top five overseas destinations.

Beach holidays were the preferred type of getaway, garnering 76 per cent of the vote, followed by city holidays (59%) and cruising (34%).

Lower-income households are more likely to embark on a cruise holiday this year than higher-income households, which indicated a preference for kids’ theme park holidays.
