Just when you thought tourists had abandoned ridiculous behaviour such as hijacking a plane to see an estranged wife and destroying a 126-yr-old statue while taking a selfie

… tourists go out and attempt to steal bricks from a historic site.

A couple of tourists were fined some 1,500 zloty (AU$550) each this week after they were caught attempting to ‘souvenir’ bricks from the crematorium at Auschwitz-Birkenau, TheJournal.ie reported.

Local law enforcement told media that the 30-year-old woman and the 36-year-old man admitted to the wrongdoing and were charged with “theft of a cultural asset”.

“They explained that they had wanted to bring back a souvenir and didn’t realise the consequences of their actions.”

In addition the fine, both tourists were handed a suspended sentence of one year in jail for their actions.

Auschwitz-Birkenau is a former Nazi death camp where over one million people were killed between 1940-1945, including Jewish, non-Jewish Poles, Roma (gypsies), Soviet prisoners of war, anti-Nazi resistance fighters.
