What’s one way to guarantee a steady stream of tourism to your city for at least two to three years? Try hosting a quadrennial sporting event viewed by millions of people worldwide.

That’s exactly what Los Angeles is doing!

The city, which is home to the celebs, played backdrop to the 2016 movie of the year and welcomed tourist numbers equivalent to the population of Argentina, has just won the rights to host the 2028 Olympic Games.

The decision was confirmed this week, with Paris selected for the 2024 Games and L.A. for the following event.

Discover Los Angeles ANZ Regional Director, Craig Gibbons, welcomed the announcement, saying the tourism board is “thrilled to have been granted the opportunity to host” for a third time.

“Sports and the outdoors are deeply embedded in L.A. culture and with over 300 days of sunshine each year, L.A. is perfectly positioned to welcome the many thousands of Olympians, officials and fans from around the world in 2028.”

Gibbons continued, saying that as L.A.’s second largest overseas market, he expects Australian to ‘high jump’ at the opportunity of watching the sporting event in the City of Angels.

“We anticipate Aussies will jump at the chance,” he said.

To celebrate the win, L.A.’s tourism leaders decorated iconic landmarks across the city with Olympic colours.

Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall, LAX and Griffith Park all featured the recognisable blue, purple, pink, orange and yellow.

Additionally, the destination has already started planning where the sporting competition will be held, including the Opening Ceremony which will take place in the revitalised Downtown and Hollywood.
