Forget sultry barbeques, backyard cricket and a picnic at the beach – new research finds that at least a third of Aussies want a white Christmas this year and are heading north.

The report, conducted by online booking website www.cheapflights.com.au, found that 33 percent of Australians surveyed were planning a Christmas break in the Northern Hemisphere for a white Christmas.

Europe, North America and Scandinavia ranked high on the search list, according to the website.

The research also found that Aussies are planning to depart right in the thick of the festive celebrations. Domestically, locals are most likely to fly out between 21 to 25 December, with Christmas Eve the most popular departure date.

For international travellers, 19 and 18 December are the key outbound dates, followed closely by 23 to 25 December.
