Australian surfer Mick Fanning has narrowly escaped being attacked by a large shark on live broadcast during the world championship final of the J-Bay Open in South Africa.

Australian surfing star Mick Fanning has survived being attacked by a shark during the J-Bay Open World Surf League event in South Africa.

The dramatic event was captured on video showing a shark thrashing in the water near the 34-year old surfer during his final agains fellow Australian Julian Wilson at Jeffreys Bay, east of Port Elizabeth.

The footage shows a fin sticking out of the water as the shark appears to knock Fanning off his board. Luckily the Fanning managed to return to the shore unharmed with the help of organisers, and the decision was made to call the event off immediately.

Later Commissioner Kieren Perrow announced the event was over and that both finalists were to receive second place points and prizes.

“I was swimming away, then I realized that it might come for me so I turned around to face it if it came again.”
