The wait is over and it’s time to hit the slopes! Thredbo Resort is officially open, showcasing the new Merritts Gondola and making Aussie skiers and boarders extremely happy.
The ski season has officially kicked off and the slopes are waiting for you!
NSW’s Thredbo Resort and Mount Buller in Victoria have today started operating ski lifts, with Perisher, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek following the snowy footprints and turning lifts on from Wednesday.
The 2020 snow season will look a bit different this year with social distancing measures in place, and a range of other health and hygiene measures to ensure COVID-19 safety.
Ski resorts will operate at a reduced capacity and group ski and snowboarding lessons are not permitted, while all accommodation and facilities at the ski fields will have screening and safeguards in place.
However, this will not dampen the mood, as “it’s a banger bluebird day” and Thredbo resort is stoked to be welcoming snow bunnies back to breathe in that fresh mountain air.
Did you know, Thredbo is also doing its part for the planet, too?
The resort is Australia’s first snow resort to have all major resort operations powered by 100% renewable energy together with Red Energy and Snowy Hydro.
New environmental initiatives for 2020 include sugarcane pulp food packaging (certified compostable and sustainable) and a closed-loop organics recycling machine, doubling Thredbo’s food waste recycling capacity.
Pretty cool, hey.
Let’s ride the Merritts Gondola
The funky new cabin-style Gondola is similar to those found in Europe and North America. It represents the culmination of two years of planning and development, delivering a new crucial inter-mountain link.
Thredbo says the new Merritts Gondola investment will further enhance this position, replacing the Merritts double chairlift and quadrupling capacity on the snow.
YEWWWW!
“The launch of the Gondola is a huge event for Thredbo and the entire community who have worked so hard to make this happen. It is a remarkable engineering achievement thanks to the tenacity and depth of knowledge and expertise at Doppelmayr, the world’s leading manufacturer of ski lifts.”
Stuart Diver, General Manager of Thredbo Resort
