The one US destination Agents keep underestimating

"Travel Agents don't realise what they're going to get here until they come and experience it."

“Travel Agents don’t realise what they’re going to get here until they come and experience it.”

The USA generally gets a good rap from Australian Travel Agents, whether they’ve travelled to the country or not. There’s enough information out there to give them an overall impression of the various states and cities without making the journey across the Pacific (although there’s nothing quite like experiencing something in person).

Except when it comes to this one spot.

According to Kristin Rust, Travel Agents tend to underestimate California’s Mammoth Mountain because they don’t realise the destination’s true potential until the visit.

“There’s a lot of surprise and genuine excitement when Travel Agents come over for famils.”

The biggest surprise amongst consultants is discovering how accessible the destination is to other popular Californian hot spots, making it the ideal dual-vacation destination.

“You can be skiing in Mammoth Mountain in the morning and then walking around Disney the next,” she explained. “Or you can have a ski vacation in Mammoth before enjoying a spring break in Los Angeles.”

“You won’t get that dual-vacation anywhere else.”

Another unexpected benefit of the destination is discovering it offers more than just a ski holiday. Rust said Mammoth Mountain is ‘hot’ during the summer too, with activities such as mountain bike rides, fly fishing on lakes and camping.

Travellers with young children can rest assured that they’ll be well catered for in Mammoth Mountain, because it has “been built for customer service and families”.

“We have infrastructure that is built to cater for families, because that’s what we want. We want more families,” she added.

“We’ve got large condos with multiple rooms. We’ve got a lot of condos and the value is incredible.”

Australia is the number one international market for Mammoth Mountain, followed by the UK. Rust said Australian visitors tend to be ‘loyal and consistent’ in travel to the destination, with many repeat visitors.
