The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) is advising Aussies in Taiwan to monitor local media and listen to authorities as a Typhoon Dujuan travels towards the destination.

The storm is forecast to reach Taiwan’s east coast this evening and travel just south of Taiwan’s capital, Taipei.

Joint Typhoon Warning Center has predicted it could bring winds of 231 kph and heavy rain. Meteorologist, Guy Michael, says the typhoon could be the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane when it reaches land.

Some 3,000 people from two outlying islands just off Taiwan have been evacuated – many of them tourists.

“Transport links could be affected.

“Monitor local media for updates, follow the advice of local authorities and check with your travel provider or airline about any transport disruptions.”

Flightaware indicates that around 30 flights to and from Taiwan were cancelled yesterday and 23 today, Travel Pulse reported. The number is expected to rise today as the typhoon approaches land.
