New Zealand is certainly on the map now after the country’s capital, Wellington, was named the number one most livable city in the world for the second consecutive year.
Yeah, Wellington. It’s almost as crazy as Canberra being named ‘world’s top city to visit‘ – oh wait, that did happen (what’s going on in the world?).
The city topped the annual Deutsche Bank Liveable City Index for a second year, outdoing better-known cities such as Zurich (2nd), Copenhagen (3rd), Edinburgh (4th) and Vienna (5th).
According to the index, Wellington received the number one ranking for several reasons, but mostly because of its access to health care, reasonable cost of living, affordable property to income ratio, low pollution, great climate and safety levels.
It also helps that the city was used as the base of operations for some of the world’s biggest movies in the past two decades, such as the entire Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogy.
We’re beginning to understand the appeal.
Wellington’s Regional Economy Development Agency (WREDA) Chief Executive, Lance Walker, said that while some may be surprised by the results (mhmm), those living in the city will positively understand why it’s the world’s best city to live.
“When it comes to lifestyle, Wellington blows other cities away. The city has all the best a big city has to offer – great restaurants, shopping, art, events, markets – but all in a compact area with nature all around us.”
Lance Walker, WREDA Chief Executive
‘Scuse me, just packing for New Zealand’s capital now.
