Game on: Bonza’s next aircraft pays tribute to the Matildas

Australia’s newest airline Bonza will name its fifth aircraft, 'Matilda', to pay tribute to the national team’s striking success in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Matilda will join Shazza, Bazza, Sheila and Malc in the fledgling carrier’s fleet next year.

Australia’s newest airline Bonza will name its fifth aircraft, ‘Matilda’, to pay tribute to the national team’s striking success in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Matilda will join Shazza, Bazza, Sheila and Malc in the fledgling carrier’s fleet next year.

Bonza’s fifth plane, due in 2024 after the airline’s Gold Coast base launch, will have the moniker, Matilda, painted on the side of the aircraft.

The move follows the airline’s route of asking the public to nickname its fleet.

Bonza CCO Carly Povey said naming the planes has personified the aircraft and given them unique personalities among Bonza’s team and customers.

“Like the rest of the nation, our team of legends has been gripped by ‘Matilda Mania’, thanks to their sportsmanship, mateship with one another and their pride in wearing the green and gold,” she said.

“As an airline solely focused on Australia, it seemed fitting to name our next aircraft, Matilda.”

Bonza launched in January 2023 and currently operates 33 routes to 17 domestic destinations from Sunshine Coast and Melbourne airport hubs.

Along with fleet expansion, the low-cost carrier is looking to add extra destinations to the Bonza network.

Bonza CEO Tim Jordan told Karryon the airline would “love to enter the market of Sydney if we could actually get slots”.

“We believe there are up to 20 destinations that we could service to and from Sydney.”
