Hopping to it: Qantas launches new Indonesia flights and international sale

Qantas has announced it will launch a new nonstop international route from Melbourne to Jakarta.

Qantas has announced it will launch a new nonstop international route from Melbourne to Jakarta.

Commencing 16 April 2023, the Qantas service will operate three times per week utilising the carrier’s A330 aircraft.

Subject to regulatory approval, the new service will add to the flying kangaroo’s existing Sydney-Jakarta flights and boost capacity between Australia and Indonesia by more than 6,600 seats per month.

Qantas hopes the route will also be popular with travellers connecting to other destinations in Indonesia such as Surabaya and Medan.

The service is the third new international route Qantas has launched out of Melbourne since borders reopened, following new flights to Delhi and Dallas-Fort Worth.

“Victoria is an incredibly important part of our network and we’re seeing strong demand for travel to and from Melbourne,” Qantas Domestic and International CEO Andrew David said.

“We expect these flights to be popular with Victoria’s large Indonesian expat community wanting to visit family and friends back home as well as offering a new gateway for travellers looking to explore the region.

“Indonesia is a rapidly growing economy and home to more than 270 million people. As one of Australia’s closest neighbours, these new flights will also help support the growing trade and investment links between our two countries.

“We’d like to thank the Victorian Government and Melbourne Airport for their support and collaboration on the launch of this new route.”

26 international destinations on sale

To mark the announcement, Qantas has launched a sale on the route, with airfares starting from $899 return.

The flying kangaroo is also offering discounted fares on 25 other international destinations, with more than 170,000 seats up for grabs.

With discounts of up to 35 per cent on normal lead-in fares, the sale will run until 7 February 2023 (or until sold out).

Some of the sale fares include:

  • Melbourne – Delhi from $999 return
  • Melbourne – London from $1,699 return
  • Melbourne – Singapore from $759 return
  • Melbourne – Dallas/Fort Worth from $1,899 return
