Let’s take a moment to welcome the Great Southern to the tracks; the newest member of the Journey Beyond train team and a hot contender for the latest ‘great rail journey of the world’.

Launched by the Australian-owned Journey Beyond, the first Great Southern service set off from Adelaide on Friday, stopping at the Grampians, Canberra, Coffs Harbour and Brisbane.

The journey from Adelaide to Brisbane is a distance of nearly 3000 kilometres, which is roughly the same as those between the Ghan between Adelaide and Darwin.

The Journey

The inaugural journey carried 214 passengers in 28 cars, stretching 711 metres long and it will return via Coffs Harbour, Newcastle, Melbourne and the Twelve Apostles.

However, unlike the Overland, the Adelaide to Melbourne service due to close on December 31, the new service will not pick up or drop off passengers in regional areas.

This new service is a great option for clients wishing to travel during the summer seasonal hiatus of the Ghan, which ceases operation, due to the wet season and extreme heat.

The Great Southern is also a wonderful choice for those climate-conscious clients wishing to sit back and enjoy the magic of slow-travel.

As with the Ghan and Indian Pacific, the Great Southern offers gold single, gold twin and platinum cabins.

It’s currently only available to book until January 2020, but watch this space for more details!
