A local travel insurance company’s database was hacked late last year, with potentially thousands of Australian’s personal information stolen and some even posted online.

Aussie Travel Cover is said to have been hacked on 18 December, but the company didn’t notify travel agents until 23 December, ABC News reported.

During the online raid, the hacker took clients’ names, phone numbers, email addresses, travel dates and policy costs.

Some of the information was even posted online.

KarryOn has attempted to contact Aussie Travel Cover for comment and is yet to receive a response.

However, the company told ABC News that credit card details were not kept on the website or database.

Despite being aware of the invasion, the agency opted not to notify customers. Instead the company told travel agents in an email that it was investigating the breach and “at this stage, there is no reason to advise policyholders”.

One of the company’s customers, Sophia told ABC News that the situation is concerning particularly because the hacker has released some information and withheld the rest.

“There’s all the stuff the hacker hasn’t released publicly and yet may be selling via the black market or passing on via various nefarious means. The worry is things like identity theft.”

An investigation is believed to be underway. Aussie Travel Cover said it is cooperating with police but could not provide further details.

What do you think? Should a company inform their clients of a hacking as soon as it happens or wait until they know what has been stolen?
