New chapters: A&K acquires Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony

Luxury adventure specialists A&K Travel Group makes waves with the purchase of cruise ships Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, which will continue to operate under the Crystal Cruises brand after a full refurbishment in 2023.

Luxury adventure specialists A&K Travel Group makes waves with the purchase of cruise ships Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, which will continue to operate under the Crystal Cruises brand after a full refurbishment in 2023.

A&K Travel Group, owned by Abercrombie & Kent founder, co-chairman and CEO Geoffrey Kent and Heritage Group’s Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, has also bought the Crystal Cruises brand.

The cruisy move appears to throw a lifeline to the pandemic-embattled Crystal Cruises, which suspended operations earlier this year after a financial crisis with former parent company Genting Hong Kong.

Sailing into a new chapter

A&K Travel Group, Crystal Cruises and Abercrombie & Kent co-chairman Mr Lefebvre said the acquisition shored up a legacy that began 35 years ago when his family purchased and then sold Sitmar Cruises, building three purpose-built cruise ships and pioneering a new way of cruising.

“I am thrilled to start this new chapter and be back in an industry that has always had, and always will, have a special place in my heart,” he said.

“When the opportunity arose to acquire Crystal Cruises, I did not think twice. Having my incredible friend and inspiring leader, Geoffrey Kent, next to me makes this venture even more enjoyable.”

Mr Kent concurred: “Even though it seems like yesterday, 30 years have passed since the Lefebvre family and I had our first ship together – Manfredi and I have been best friends and business associates ever since.”

“The idea of combining the unparalleled onboard service of Crystal Cruises with the extraordinary tailor-made experiences Abercrombie & Kent has successfully provided for the past 60 years fills me with excitement, enthusiasm and pride.”

A&K Travel Group CEO Cristina Levis will steer Crystal Cruises and Abercrombie & Kent into this new chapter.

“My return to luxury cruising after five years brings back so many emotions. Manfredi, Geoffrey and I look forward to welcoming past Crystal and Abercrombie & Kent guests on board as well as those seeking rewarding luxury experiences.”

Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony will resume service in 2023 after extensive upgrades.
