Zillennials are swapping Insta-curated travel moments for real, raw and surprising experiences, preferring the authentic over airbrushed, according to new Contiki research. So, what do these 18–34-year-old travellers really want?

Contiki’s survey of 1,200 respondents found young travellers want to live in the moment without the social ‘gram pressure’ with three in 10 preferring to remember their holiday from personal pics instead.

Almost half of Zillennials (49%) say they have tried to plan the perfect moment while on a holiday, however 70 per cent would prefer to leave those moments to chance or to happen naturally.

Aussies are keen on a natural high.

For Aussies, a ‘perfect moment’ meant enjoying food or drink with a view (51%), watching a sunrise or sunset with friends or family (49%) or experiencing something funny that becomes a story to tell for years to come (46%).

Thrill-seeking Aussie Zillennials also want to do something different on holiday. Almost half of travellers (45%) say stepping out of their comfort zone makes a holiday memorable and 30 per cent are keen for an adrenaline rush, such as bungee-jumping.

Solo travel in a social setting

Going solo on a group tour is also trending with 39 per cent of Aussies saying group tours make a trip more memorable and almost half (49%) agreed that holidaying with people IRL is important.

TTC Tour Brands & Contiki Managing Director Toni Ambler said: “Over the past 12 months, one of our big observations of Contiki travellers is that now more than ever, they are embracing the social side of group travel.”

“In a digital world, spending real time with real people and travelling together is what makes a trip truly unforgettable.

“It’s often the special, sometimes unexpected moments on these trips that leave the deepest impact, becoming stories they go on to remember and retell for years to come.”
