9 Wonderful Travel Inspired Movies To Fuel Your Wanderlust

Let's be real here. You could probably be pursuing the creative projects you've been thinking about for the past six years, but instead, you're most likely getting an A* in procrastination and immersing yourself in the pleasures of home cinema.

Let’s be real here. You could probably be pursuing the creative projects you’ve been thinking about for the past six years, but instead, you’re most likely getting an A* in procrastination and immersing yourself in the pleasures of home cinema.

Perhaps we should be more productive with our time right now. Baking stuff, learning languages, inventing things and changing the world in some shape or form.

But meh.

And that’s totally okay. We’re all this together! (Binge-watching TV, shovelling copious amounts of popcorn in our mouths at any one time – that is.)

Therefore, we’ve been discussing our favourite travel-inspired movies; movies that take us to that special place in our imagination and guide our wanderlust to places we’ve always dreamed of going.

So sit back and enjoy the films (in no particular order):

#1. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

When Walter’s job along is threatened, he decides to finally take action in the real world by embarking on a global journey that turns into an epic adventure; even more wild than his over the top imagination. This is a feel-good movie, with lots of laughs and awesome travel experiences thrown into the mix.

#2. The Beach

The epic and kind of trippy 2000 adventure film “The Beach” will have you on the edge of your sofa. The movie allows you to feel 21 again; precariously reliving a wild Thai backpacking trip, while swooning over a young, half-naked Leo DiCaprio.

What are dreams made of, if not this?!

#3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Who doesn’t adore a classic boy meets girl love story set in magical New York?

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is based on Holly Golightly; a flighty, superficial Manhattan party girl, who crosses paths with Paul, a kind-hearted aspiring writer who threatens to get in the way of her ambitions and reveal her true self.

“If I could find a real life place to make me feel like Tiffany’s, then I’d buy some furniture and give the cat a name.”

Holly Golightly, Breakfast at Tiffany’s

#4. Life is Beautiful

Life is Beautiful, or ‘La vita è bella’ is a stunning art-house movie, telling the story of a Jewish librarian, who uses a perfect mixture of will, humor, and imagination to protect his son from the dangers of war, after they become victims of the Holocaust.

La vita è bella is an unforgettable fable that proves love, family, and imagination conquers all.

#5. Darjeeling Limited

The Darjeeling Limited is a film about three rich brothers taking an overland train trip through India to heal their broken bond. When everything seems to be going wrong, their whacky experiences start putting things into perspective.

Funny, beautifully shot and a movie 100% guaranteed to make you want to plan a trip to India.

#6. Lost in Translation

Two strangers in the same place at the same time. Bob is an aging actor and Charlotte is the bored wife of a photographer in Tokyo on business.

They are an unlikely pair, sharing the feeling of loneliness in a foreign city filled with millions of people. Highlighting the ups and downs of travelling in a new country; this is a film we’re sure most of you will be able to relate to.

#7. Baraka

Baraka is a non-narrative documentary that explores themes via a kaleidoscopic compilation of natural events, life, human activities and technological phenomena shot in 24 countries on six continents over a 14-month period.

Baraka (meaning “blessing” in several languages,) is more of a transcendent global tour – an exploration of extraordinary places, peoples and cultures that create the world’s pulse. You’ll be blown away…

#8. Amelie

This whimsical, contemporary French classic shows the life of an imaginative waitress living in Montmartre as she goes on quite the personal adventure throughout the city, in search of her purpose in life.

Cue the heartfelt good-vibes. Ahh the romance – take us to Paris!

#9. Grand Budapest Hotel

Following the adventures of Gustave H and Zero Moustafa, The Grand Budapest Hotel is a fantastic comedy/drama that explores the topics of tragedy, war, and fascism, as well as nostalgia, friendship, and loyalty.
