Where else in the world can you stay in a converted tea factory, pluck your own tea and take it home with you as a souvenir? Sitting almost two kilometres above sea level and situated in the cool climes of Nuwara Eliya surrounded by mountains and tea estates, the Heritance Tea Factory is one of the most unique hotels in Sri Lanka.

Originally a tea factory from the days of the British Raj, it was converted into a hotel almost 20 years ago, offering 54 cosy and comfortable rooms with the most modern of amenities.

During your stay, you can dine in a 1930s narrow-gauge railway carriage, set out on nature treks to discover the local wildlife and communities, or pick your own tea and have it processed in the Mini Tea Factory to take a small piece of Sri Lanka home with you. Don’t miss high tea on the terrace or a delicious tea-themed menu in the restaurant.

 

2. Vivanta by Taj, Sawai Madhopur, India

Vivanta by Taj in Sawai Madhopur is the only heritage hotel in Ranthambore National Park. The original lodge was built over 80 years ago and was a hunting stop for the Maharaja of Jaipur. Back then, tents were pitched on the vast grounds and the royal family camped here as often as they could.

Today, the tents have been replaced by 24 luxurious rooms and 12 suites but the original Art Deco style has been maintained in the lodge that now houses the dining hall, bar and lounge. Each room contains the best modern technology can offer – in the comfort of rustic furnishings that add to the charm of the stylish décor.

The Tundra Buggy Lodge, located in the heart of polar bear country, offers a unique, immersive experience where guests can fall asleep and wake up with polar bears right outside their window and, on a clear night, the northern lights dance above, unhindered from the lights of town.

The Lodge consists of two accommodation units, a lounge car, a dining car, and staff quarters. Outdoor viewing platforms connect each unit and allow for outdoor photography. Situated far from the lights of town, the Tundra Buggy® Lodge is the perfect place to view bears all day long and have optimal northern lights viewing at night (weather permitting).

Finca Adalgisa is situated within an old vineyard of Malbec vines which are over 100 years old.
