The saying goes, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel. And for anyone who thinks they can’t afford travel insurance, these policies might change their mind.
Canstar has unveiled the winners of its 2022 Travel Insurance Star Ratings and Awards after it suspended the awards at the start of the pandemic.
In its comprehensive review of the most outstanding value travel insurance policies for the year, Australia’s biggest financial comparison site considered more than 150 policies from 50 providers.
To reach its results, it weighed up costs against coverage across five consumer profiles – single, couple, family, mature couple and mature single – and 10 regions, plus cruise: Americas, Domestic, North Africa and the Middle East, North-East Asia, North-West Europe, Oceania, South-East Asia, Southern and Central Asia, Southern and Eastern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.
It then separated the winners into four consumer-focused categories: International, Domestic, Seniors and Cruise insurance.
The types of policies Canstar looked at included:
- All policies: Coverage of luggage and personal effects, cancellation fees and loss of deposit
- International destinations only: $1 million overseas medical and hospital cover per traveller and coverage of repatriation and evacuation services
Canstar also made COVID-19 coverage a mandatory requirement when considering the awards and providers must have been in the market for at least 12 months.
“It is now more important than ever that travelling Australians find the travel insurance coverage that meets their needs as well as the ‘new normal’ risks involved in post-pandemic travel,” Canstar said when announcing the winners.
“Canstar’s Travel Insurance Star Ratings and Awards can provide a starting point for where to look when finding a travel insurance provider.”
