Tight ass or savvy traveller?

As travel agents, we know that the shortest and most direct journey usually isn't the cheapest option in our GDS – as paradoxical as that may seem to the consumer.

As travel agents, we know that the shortest and most direct journey usually isn’t the cheapest option in our GDS – as paradoxical as that may seem to the consumer.

Finally, some consumers are starting to figure that out for themselves.

Case in point: British teen Jordon Cox.

Jordon (18) recently uploaded a video on his YouTube page which documented his journey from Sheffield to Essex via Berlin – 1,600 kilometres away.

Via Berlin?

Yep – that’s right.

The goofy teen actually flew to Berlin from East Midlands Airport with Ryanair, spent the day sightseeing in the German capital, and then hopped back on a Ryanair flight to London Stansted before getting a bus back home.

And why? Well, because it was about £7.72 ($14 AUD) cheaper than buying a one-way train ticket back home.

This was his cost breakdown:

  • Train from Sheffield to Derby: £4
  • Bus from Derby to East Midlands Airport: £4.20
  • Ryanair flight to Berlin: £11.83
  • Train from airport to Berlin city centre: £5
  • Currywurst sausage for lunch: £1.50
  • Ryanair flight to London Stansted: £9.54
  • Bus home to Hutton from Stansted Airport: £8

Total: £44.07 ($90 AUD)

Compare that with the £51.79 ($105 AUD) it would have cost Jordon to get the train back home, and we think that’s a pretty good deal: Jordon got to travel back home AND explore a new city for £7.72 ($14 AUD) cheaper than just taking the train.

We like that….a lot…

The spirit of travel is strong within you Jordon… Godspeed!
