Flight attendant: "We don't want to die"

An impromptu comment made by a Ryanair flight attendant shocked passengers onboard a Glasgow to Dublin service recently, causing a stir onboard and online through social media.

“We have ice on the wing – we don’t want to die!”

Those were the words heard by frustrated passengers onboard Ryanair flight FR5773 as it sat on the tarmac in Glasgow for hours as extreme weather conditions – including heavy snow fall – grounded or delayed many flights across the UK over a 24 hour period.

But the flight attendant’s off-the-cuff remark – intended to lighten the mood and placate the frustrated passengers – did no such thing, and actually prompted some passengers onboard the flight to taunt and yell at the poor woman. Others sat in disbelief over what they had just heard.

A 13-second clip of the incident was uploaded to Facebook and shared throughout social media by one of the holiday-makers onboard the flight. Comments were mostly derogatory.

One passenger wrote on her Instagram page that “This is what happens when you’ve been delayed almost 8 hours, everyone’s at a lost including staff ‘we don’t want to die’ absolute mayhem.”

She added: “All hell was breaking loose when a member of staff made this outrageous announcement.”

According to some of the passengers, the flight attendant’s comments “only fuelled the already anxious and angry passengers”.

Head of Communications for Ryanair, Robin Kiely, said the airline will be speaking with the flight attendant involved and apologises for the “regrettable comment” she made in the heat of the moment.

Passengers were given a voucher worth $7.20 for their troubles upon arrival in Dublin.
