The Germans are known for a lot of things: efficiency, beer, productivity. But not for their sense of humour. In fact, according to most people, this is one characteristic the Germans completely lack…

But this couldn’t be more wrong.

Germans appreciate a good chuckle just like the rest of us, but some of their jokes may be lost on us, and ours on them. A big part of this miscommunication stems from the way different languages are constructed, and how this affects the way cultures deliver and perceive jokes.

Yet even still, it would be a complete mistake to claim that Germans lack a sense of humour, because there’s actually a thriving comedy scene in Germany – you just need to know where to find it!

To help on this front, here’s a short guide on where to find the giggles in Germany.

Believe it or not, but Berlin is home to what is probably the biggest comedy scene in Europe right now. Everyone from Bill Bailey and Eddie Izzard are selling out shows in the nation’s capital, and tons of comedy clubs are opening up all over the city, featuring shows in both German and English.

Definitely check out Comedy Cafe Berlin if you’re in the mood for a laugh, which has nightly comedy shows in English and is the capital’s first international alternative comedy stage. And how could we not mention the famous Comedy Club Kookaburra and it’s improvised theatre shows in English?

Talking about breaking down stereotypes, you’ve probably heard that Germans really, really like their sausages.

According to his stereotype, Germans are pretty easy to please when it comes to dinner time. Just give em’ a sausage and some beer and they’ll be well satisfied… Or so goes the general stereotype.

But oh my friend, the German palette and culinary scene is much more sophisticated than this!

Don’t believe me? Well then head to Berlin, Germany’s cultural melting pot, and you’ll find delicious recipes from all over the world in the city’s funky eateries, classy restaurants and delicisou – and cheap – street eats.

HAVING A MIGHTY LAUGH IN MUNICH

Just like Berlin, Munich is currently experiencing an exciting new wave of standup comedy clubs sweeping through the city.

But that’s not to say that Germany hasn’t had a thriving comedy scene for decades – if that were the case, then how would you explain the stellar success of such German-born comedians like Hella von Sinnen, Tom Gerhardt and Thomas Hermanns (look them up if you don’t already know them).

But back to the clubs. For a guaranteed night of laughs in Munich, check out the Comedy Club Munich, which hosts shows in both German and English.

Germany’s financial capital certainly knows how to let off a little steam through the therapeutic effects of laughter. Check out FITS Headquarters which features some of the best talent on the Frankfurt improvisational comedy scene each month.

Oh, and just so you know, German comedians understand what the world thinks of their countrymen, which is why they’re doing all they can do change such an incorrect perception. This short clip below shows them giving us a piece of their mind…

So don’t be fooled into thinking Germany lacks the humour. Book a stay in one of the hundreds of hotels offered by roomsXML and discover the hilarious truth about Germany – no kidding!
