An innovative collaboration between andBeyond, a South African wildlife conservancy, and partner communities has led to the historic translocation of white rhinos from South Africa to Tanzania in “a significant step in the region’s conservation”.
Munywana Conservancy from South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province donated the near threatened species in collaboration with Tanzania’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT) and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) in what marks “a major step toward securing the future of the species”.
The rhinos are now in temporary enclosures for a habituation period before they will be released.

andBeyond Conservation & Community Impact Director Tony Adams says it has been actively supporting the conservation of endangered species like white rhino through collaborative and often ground-breaking wildlife translocations for more than 30 years.
“We are honoured to have been invited by Tanzania’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to facilitate the sourcing and translocation of the animals for this groundbreaking project.
“Initiatives such as these are a proven conservation strategy in ensuring the survival of endangered species.”

andBeyond’s commitment to white rhino conservation spans decades.
In 1991, andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve undertook the largest-ever translocation, reintroducing 26 of the animals to the reserve.

Ngorongoro Crater was identified as an ideal location for the latest translocation due to its habitat suitability and strong security measures.
The translocation is one of several that will be taking place in phases, with the ultimate goal being 36 donated white rhino.
