APT’s joint owner and director Robert McGeary retires after four decades

Robert McGeary is retiring from APT after almost four decades with the business, with his sister Lou Tandy continuing at the helm.

Robert McGeary is retiring from APT after almost four decades with the business, with his sister Lou Tandy continuing at the helm.

The announcement follows the passing of Robert and Lou’s father, APT founder Geoff McGeary OAM last year.

Robert McGeary says, “I had the privilege of working with my father for over 40 years before his passing in 2025, helping grow APT Travel Group into what it is today”.

“After considering the skilled board of six directors (including my sister Lou Tandy), our strong leadership team led by CEO David Cox and adopting the strong five-year strategic plan, I am confident in the position and the direction of the business.

“After 33 years serving on our board, now feels like the right time to step down and let the next generation lead the business. As I retire from my role, I’m proud of our position as Australia’s premier travel company.”

Tandy says, “Rob has worked tirelessly alongside my father to help build the business into Australia’s leading travel company, and we celebrate his incredible contribution today”.

“I’m deeply committed to APT Travel Group’s ongoing growth and success, and will be working with CEO David Cox, our independent board, and our exceptional management team to build upon the incredible foundation my family has created.”

Cox says APT Travel Group’s strategy, team and commitment to excellence are “firmly in place”.

“We are deeply indebted to Rob McGeary for his tremendous vision and contribution. Lou Tandy brings expertise in the luxury travel space, and with her leadership in this next chapter, we’ll continue to grow, innovate and set new standards. We’re having a record year, and the future is bright.”

Speaking to Karryon last month, Cox reflected on the company’s success saying the tour company’s goal was to be a leader in luxury, something he says it has now “nailed” with the “proof in the pudding in our sales”.

In October the luxury tour company recorded the strongest sales month in its 98-year history.

Cox says that’s thanks to its “innovation, resilience, and strong trade partnerships, supported by significant new investments in ships across Europe, Vietnam and Egypt, and upgraded Kimberley lodges”.

“We rebranded and launched two new riverships, APT Solara and APT Ostara, which have redefined luxury cruising in European rivers with six dining venues, and they’ve sold out for 2025.”

Cox says it will focus on small group touring, and it’s about ensuring you are always ahead of the discerning luxury traveller.

“You can’t stand still; customers are well researched and use tech tools, and so you have to keep challenging yourself to better the product or you will get left behind.”
