French-flagged Ponant Explorations Group acquired a majority stake in Aqua Expeditions in a strategic coup, enabling the luxury small-ship line to expand globally as a destination specialist.
Established for 18 years and a global leader in luxury exploration, Aqua Expeditions currently operates a fleet of three river and two ocean small ships in biodiversity hotspots, such as the Galápagos, Raja Ampat, Komodo, Spice Islands, Mekong River and Peruvian Amazon River.
This transaction, backed by the French Artémis Group investment company, comes at a pivotal time as Aqua Expeditions launches East Africa itineraries, exploring the Seychelles and Tanzania with a particular focus on the Aldabra island group.

Ponant Explorations Group CEO Hervé Gastinel said the Group was deeply impressed with the experiential travel brand, which operates with a maximum of 16–40 passengers per ship.
“We are thrilled to welcome Aqua Expeditions into the Ponant family. This partnership aligns perfectly with our vision of excellence and sustainability in the luxury sector,” he said.
“It reflects our commitment to offering unparalleled travel experiences in iconic destinations, such as the Galápagos and now also river journeys, while preserving the natural beauty of the places we explore.”

CEO and Founder Francesco Galli Zugaro will remain as a shareholder. He will continue to lead and operate the company as a stand-alone business unit under the Aqua Expeditions brand along with his senior management team.
“Joining forces with Ponant Explorations Group and having the support of the Artémis Group is a remarkable opportunity for Aqua Expeditions,” Galli Zugaro said.
“Partnering with another family-owned business ensures we maintain a heritage of luxury in our brand. With the financial support and expertise from our partners, we are well-positioned to continue our growth and offer our guests unforgettable journeys to the world’s most biodiverse and culturally rich regions while maintaining our core brand values.”
