Luxury Byron Bay hotel, Raes on Wategos, has celebrated its 30th birthday by opening a new 10-suite property, Raes Guesthouses. Here’s a sneak peek.

Just steps from the original hotel, the 10 new suites have sweeping views of Wategos Beach or the tropical landscaped gardens.

There are also two lap pools, a private terrace bar, and access to the original property’s hatted restaurant and spa.

Raes Managing Director, Jordy Catalano says, “We’re excited to introduce a fresh yet familiar take on luxury, just in time to celebrate our 30th birthday”.

“This expansion allows us to meet growing demand while preserving the boutique, intimate nature of Raes, with a continued commitment to providing personalised service and an exceptional guest experience.”

Each suite has a king-sized bed with a custom-designed bedhead, and many have private balconies with sun lounges. A Mediterranean vibe, the design is all earthen pastels in blues and greens, hand-painted joinery, custom furnishings, organically moulded plasterwork and mid-century lighting.

Interior designer Tamsin Johnson says, “I wanted to build on the soul of the original property, while thoughtfully adapting to the unique architecture of this space”.

“The style hints at Spanish-Hollywood and Balearic influences, with added colour and a playful coastal aesthetic to set the property apart from the original hotel.

“Strong materials like marble tie the two properties together, reinforcing a sense of shared personality. Maintaining Raes communal spirit was essential, creating a space that feels inviting and familiar to guests.”

The property has two lap pools set against tropical gardens (one with a waterfall and the other a 12-metre solar heated pool), while culinary offerings by Raes Executive Chef, Jason Saxby include a new menu inspired by the hotel’s oceanfront setting.

Think chilled oysters, swordfish katsu sandwich, spanner crab tagliolini, and a creative twist on the prawn cocktail featuring locally sourced prawns.

Guests also have direct access to the two-hatted restaurant, Raes Dining Room in the original hotel, as well as the alfresco Cellar Bar, and the spa.
