Villa San Michele, A Belmond Hotel, Florence, housed within a 15th-Century monastery, will undergo a full renovation ahead of its reopening in 2026.
Works will take place throughout 2025. Belmond aims to safeguard and preserve the historical architecture of Villa San Michele, blending restoration work of the existing structure with a refresh of the hotel’s interior spaces.
Upon its reopening, the hotel will unveil 38 completely redesigned rooms and suites, crafted by an expert team of skilled artisans.
The new spaces will aim to capture the spirit of the Villa’s storied past while elevating the accommodation offering.
Perched in Fiesole above Florence, the property offers panoramic views of the city from every corner of its gardens. Its façade is attributed to the School of Michelangelo. Following 400 years as a Franciscan sanctuary for contemplation and prayer, Villa San Michele transitioned into a private villa in the early 1800s.
The new-look interiors and gardens
The creative direction will be managed by Luigi Fragola Architects – an interior design and architecture firm based in Florence who will be working closely with Belmond’s design team.
The room count at Villa San Michele will reduce from 42 to 38 keys, which include three signature suites and 28 Suites and Junior Suites to allow an elevated accommodation offering with larger spaces.
The rooms within the main building, once home to Renaissance monks, will be redesigned; while a strong focus will be given to preserving architectural historical materials and elements, such as exposed stone, lime on the walls and terracotta, Tuscan marble, neoclassical tapestries, original antiques from the 19th century and curated artworks.
Redesigned rooms located in the terraced gardens will showcase new interiors with a soft colour palette with windows that will offer guests views of the city.
Outdoors, Florentine landscape architecture studio Luca Ghezzi Garden Design will take the lead of the 9,700 square metres of gardens at Villa San Michele, aiming to restore and redevelop the gardens, in keeping with the historical aesthetics of traditional Fiesole hillside gardens.
The restoration of Villa San Michele follows recent works on other Belmond properties including Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino and Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya in Mexico.
Villa San Michele will reopen its doors for the season 2026, with bookings resuming as of spring 2025.
