Walk Japan's newest venture, The Kyoto: Mountains to the Sea takes hikers into hinterland rarely visited in Japan's ancient capital, Kyoto.

Walk Japan’s newest venture, The Kyoto: Mountains to the Sea takes hikers into hinterland rarely visited in Japan’s ancient capital, Kyoto.

The fully guided, eight-day tour ventures through Kyoto’s backcountry, following ancient trails that weave through valleys and over high passes to Amanohashidate, considered one of Japan’s three most scenic viewpoints.

Hike through hidden valleys and quiet villages with traditional thatched buildings and learn about the culture, including the battles between oni ogres and imperial warriors; and the goddess of agriculture, Toyouke Omikami.

Staying in Japanese inns, guests dine with local families on meals created with locally sourced and grown ingredients, such as Kyoyasai heirloom vegetables, Miyama ayu sweetfish, Tanba buri yellowtail, and saba mackerel.

The walk operates from March to June and September to November.

Daily walking distances range between seven to 15 kilometres following mountain trails and quiet country lanes.
