Hospitality is more than food & beverage: Hotel industry appeals to young Aussies

Major hotel brands set aside their competitive differences this week and joined forces to inspire young job seekers to pursue a career in the hospitality sector.

Hundreds of ambitious and talented youth gathered at the first ever industry-led Hotel Career Expo in Sydney where they met with professionals to discuss career opportunities at 20 of the biggest names in the hotel trade.

Together they broke down a few industry myths, including the most common misconception that hospitality is just food and beverage. This was done by highlighting the many professional career such as events, marketing, engineering and finance.

There was also opportunity for young people to meet with future employees and gain advice on how to climb the ladder to their dream job.

Delegates were able to tap into a collective of experience provided by the speakers, which included Ronald Van Weezel, General Manager, Hilton Sydney, and Natalie Bussenschutt, General Manager, Ibis Sydney Airport.

The Expo also offered a ‘Hotel Live Experience’, an exclusive program designed to give ambitious applicants the opportunity to gain hands on, behind the scenes experience within some of Sydney’s best hotels. Experiences included three month internships and five star dinners with department managers.

All eligible Expo attendees were also invited to apply for one of three scholarships valued at over $10,000, offered by Sydney TAFE. The winners will complete the acclaimed Diploma of Hospitality Management.
