#TRAVELHACKS: How travel will actually make you a better person

Can travel make you a better person? Contiki set out to uncover the impact travel had on young travellers via a research project called ‘The Power of Travel’ and discovered that, yes, absolutely it can.

Can travel make you a better person? Contiki set out to uncover the impact travel had on young travellers via a research project called ‘The Power of Travel’ and discovered that, yes, absolutely it can.

To better understand ‘The power of travel’, youth travel brand experts Contiki commissioned two research organisations to survey nearly 3,000 millennials globally with 520 respondents from Australia aged 18-35-year-olds, testing young travellers against their peers who had never travelled internationally.

The findings overwhelmingly prove that those who have travelled internationally are more positive about themselves, their place in the world and what they can achieve in life.

The research also suggested that people who travel have stronger interpersonal relationships and actively seek out new friendships, they’re more successful in their careers – as they’re equipped with more marketable skills such as flexible, open and out of the box thinking.

Plus, their increased trust of cultures other than their own leads them to be more globally and economically aware. Overall, they are 33% more likely to be happier than their peers who have not travelled internationally.

New York is always a good idea

“Travel opens us up to new experiences and by connecting to others gives us the confidence to become better versions of ourselves,” says Katrina Barry, Managing Director of Contiki Australia.

“The friendships you make over a 3 am Gyros in Mykonos will be friendships that will stay with you for a lifetime, and the people you interact with and cultures you’re exposed to have a profound impact on your tolerance and understanding.”

“Contiki’s unique social travel experience sets millennial travellers up to have better relationships with their friends, family and with their wider communities at home, through the skills they learn through their travel experiences.”

From the research, Contiki identified five critical pillars of change that support the concept that travel makes young people the best versions of themselves.

1. Travel creates sense of belief in yourself & what you can achieve

2. Travel creates connections to others

3. Travel creates a more open mind

4. Travel creates powerful sense of citizenship

5. Travel creates a happier you

WELCOME TO THE TRAVEL PROJECT

To support the idea Contiki started The Travel Project as a celebration of the reasons why it is so important to travel.

Featuring the works of millennial content creators across multiple storytelling platforms, The Travel Project seeks to show how travel can create better humans.

It’s about exploring and learning about the world and the topics and trends that matter most, and discovering how travel can evoke a positive change, whether that be on a global scale, or just within yourself.

The latest film follows a first-time millennial traveller on a Contiki Adriatic Spirit trip to Europe with Director Tom Gould documenting José Gabriel Baez’s transformation, by capturing his travel experiences which shape his sense of self.

Can Travel change the world too? Absolutely it can.
