Step aside Melbourne, Sydney's back on top for tourists

Well, THAT didn’t take long! Travellers have named Sydney as the must-visit Australian city, less than two months after Melbourne received the title for the first time.

Sydney landed the top spot in TripAdvisor’s latest Travellers Choice Awards, with people saying its “natural beauty, iconic attractions, festival and events” are unmatched by other Aussies destinations, including Melbourne.

The announcement comes as a bit of a slap in the face to Melburnians, who saw their hometown overtake the Harbour City for the first time in January this year.

Even more surprising was that Melbourne wasn’t only knocked off the number one spot, it was pushed down to the third position, below the Gold Coast.

Jan Hutton, Chief Marketing Officer of Destination Gold Coast, says she believes that ‘word of mouth’ helped the popular beach destination sneak past Melbourne.

“At the core of our new marketing strategy is the winning aspiration to become Australia’s Most Recommended Destination,” she said.

“The number one trend in travel is to experience a destination like a local and we capitalise on this by elevating the voice of residents and visitors to humanise our ‘We Are Gold Coast’ destination brand and to tell our story effectively.”

Brisbane and Hobart helped round off the top five cities in Australia list, while Perth, Adelaide, Cairns, Port Douglas and Noosa wrapped up the top 10.
