Wearing sky-blue underpants, sitting in even numbered rows, shaking salt over the check-in area and enjoying a ‘Jet plane Champagne’.

These are just a few flying rituals Aussie travellers confessed they do when flying, according to the High Flyer survey by Wotif who said the survey of almost 15,000 Australian travellers revealed almost one in seven have a flying ritual.

“From the 14% of Aussie travellers who revealed they have a flying habit, there was a mix of interesting rituals, from wearing a particular item of clothing on every flight to doing exactly the same routine onboard every time”

Kirsty La Bruniy, Wotif Travel Specialist

Traveller confessions included admitting they must wear orange underpants when flying on Tuesdays, wearing the same outfit when travelling with their husband, and remembering to wear pink socks.

One passenger said they always drink ginger tea before being seated, while another revealed they watch the King’s Speech every time they fly.

35% of the travellers said they had to sit in a window seat.

Further, 66% of Australians revealed they have a favourite seat on a flight.

“Some passengers have a thing for numbers, in particular the rows with the numeral eight in them, with one traveller confessing they only sit in rows eight, 18 or 28,” Ms La Bruniy said.

“If you’re wondering why it always seems like the window seats are the first to sell out on a busy flight, it’s because they are the most popular seat with more than one in three (35%) Aussie travellers revealing ‘they must sit in a window seat’.

“The second most popular choice is sitting in an aisle seat (30%). It seems fewer people want to sit in the middle (4%) or in the back row (3%).”

Wotif reveals travellers’ favourite plane seat:

  • 35.% it must be a window seat
  • 29.5% I like to sit in an aisle seat
  • 21.2%  in the emergency exit row
  • 7.7%  anywhere in the front row
  • 4.3% somewhere in the middle, but not the emergency exit row
  • 2.6% anywhere in the back row
