Apart from seeing what Santa left for you under the tree and making awkward conversation with that side of the family that you don’t really see, the Christmas and New Year break is exciting for other reasons…

It’s a well deserved break for one thing, a time to unplug from Galileo and work emails. But oh, it’s soooo much more than this – if you’re a Travel Agent.

Here are three things you’re probably looking for to over the Christmas and New Year break as a Travel Agent…

1. You won’t be the only one drunk all the time…

Alcohol is the lifeblood of the travel industry, and Travel Agents believe in keeping their red blood cells at a healthy (i.e., high) level. That explains the thrice weekly drinking sessions and the mini wine cellar under the desk. But to the outside world, their drinking behaviour may appear almost alcoholic…

That is until the outside world is totally drunk and out of sorts as well – like during the Christmas and New Year break! The odds of just about everyone being drunk is extremely high during this time, and that means that drunk Travel Agents won’t stick out like a sore thumb.

Cheers to that!

2. You’ll be unreachable – unreachable!

It’s rare for Travel Agents to be completely unreachable. Even on their days off, weekends, and public holidays, it’s not uncommon for them to receive a call from the office asking about some client that’s come in to pay their booking, or worse, is stuck at the airport in Bangkok without a visa for Vietnam and is screaming for the Travel Agent to sort it out (even through the agent informed said client repeatedly that they’d need to get one).

But during the Christmas break, Travel Agents have the excuse of “it’s Christmas and I’ll be damned if I’m answering the bloody phone! That’s what our 24-hour Emergency line is for!”

And bloody oath to that!

3. You’ll be asked (slightly) less stupid questions

Remember when that Science teacher in school told you that there were no stupid questions? Well, you’ve probably determined that to be a lie since becoming a Travel Agent. And no doubt a lot of stupid questions are asked in regards to what is probably the busiest time to travel in the calendar: The Christmas and New Year break.

We’re talking such questions like: I’m looking for a cheap flight over the Christmas break to x. Why are the flights so expensive between the 20th of December and the 3rd of January? I flew to Bali in April just this year and only paid $600 – so why will it cost me $1,300 to fly there over the Christmas break?

Thankfully, when you rock up to work after this well-deserved break you won’t have to hear such filth – at least for a while.

And thank goodness for that!

What are you most looking forward to over the break?
