Virgin Australia’s got some real beef (literally) over Air New Zealand, but no, it has nothing to do with the Kiwi carrier’s recent bedding of Virgin’s major competitor.
Virgin Australia’s recent move does come with some serious shade towards Air New Zealand, specifically over its controversial decision to introduce a vegan burger on board its flights.
In case you missed the edible news earlier this month, New Zealand’s flag carrier revealed plans to introduce a completely plant-based burger on its menu that has a beef-replica patty created by Silicon Valley food tech start-up Impossible Foods.
While vegans embraced the news, meat-lovers weren’t so keen and some even saw the move as a slap in the face for New Zealand’s red-meat producers.
Can’t please everyone, ay.
Well, Virgin Australia is hoping to pick up a few of those angry flyers feeling rejected by Air New Zealand through a call out to Kiwi meat producers to create an “udderly delicious bespoke dish” that can be served on Virgin’s trans-Tasman flights.

In a cheeky social media post, Virgin Australia declared itself one of New Zealand’s biggest fans and recognised Kiwi farmers for producing some of the best quality meat just like those in Australia.
The airline continued, taking a dig at Air New Zealand’s Impossible Burger by saying it’s “not impossible” for a New Zealand meat producer to have their product served on its planes.
