IHG has revealed it’ll open its first Regent in a Japanese resort town in 2028.
The 58-room Regent Karuizawa will be an onsen retreat in the historic town of Karuizawa, which the luxury hotel brand says will “set a new benchmark in upper luxury mountain destinations”.
Surrounded by forest and hot springs with views of Mount Asama, the new-build hotel comes at a time when travel to the region grew by 30 per cent since 2019 in a move the luxury hotel brand says, “demonstrates the town’s increasing interest from international travellers”.
The retreat will have “a choice of dining and bar experiences, including a specialty restaurant with valley views” as well as a spa and gym.

IHG Hotels & Resorts Managing Director, Japan Abhijay Sandilya says, “We are delighted to announce our first Regent resort destination in Japan to our estate, marking another important milestone in the growth of the brand in the country and around the world”.
“Karuizawa is a special location within easy reach of Tokyo, renowned for its outstanding natural habitat and relaxing, rejuvenating environment.
“It enables us to create an immersive destination that harmonises tranquillity, exploration and luxury while providing seamless experiences for guests that will establish a new standard for luxury hospitality in the area.”

Regent Karuizawa will be the brand’s second property in Japan, and its first in a resort town, following Regent Kyoto, which is set to open earlier in 2028.
Set around a central garden originally landscaped over a century ago by famed landscape gardener Kumakichi Kato, the Kyoto property will offer travellers “unparalleled levels of luxury, world-class facilities and 83 elegant rooms”.
IHG has 55 hotels across 10 brands and 17 pipeline properties in Japan.
