Virgin Australia has officially rolled out changes to its carry-on baggage policy, reducing the number of cabin bags allowed for Economy passengers while increasing the overall weight limit.

From 2 February 2026, Economy travellers, including Red and Silver Velocity members are permitted to bring one standard-sized carry-on bag weighing up to 8kg, plus one small personal item that must fit under the seat in front.

This replaces the previous allowance of two carry-on items with a combined weight limit of 7kg.

Under the updated rules, Economy guests can upweight their cabin baggage but must consolidate items into a single main carry-on bag. The same size limits apply, but only one overhead-locker bag will be allowed on board, alongside a personal item such as a handbag or laptop case.

Business Class, Economy X travellers and eligible Velocity Frequent Flyer members retain their existing allowance of two carry-on bags with a combined weight of up to 14kg, plus one small personal item. No changes have been made to size limits for any cabin.

For travel advisors, the combined Virgin Australia carry-on changes present an opportunity to clearly set expectations at booking and highlight comfort-focused add-ons.

When the Virgin Australia carry-on changes were announced last year, the carrier said the revised carry-on baggage policy is designed to reduce congestion during boarding and ease competition for overhead locker space, particularly at major airports where the new rules will be enforced.

Virgin Australia COO Chris Snook said the changes reflect direct feedback from both staff and customers.

“We want your bag where you sit. These changes will help deliver an enhanced onboard experience, while keeping the boarding process simple and consistent. The result will be a smoother start to the journey and a more comfortable experience on board,” he said.

Virgin Australia also noted that a recent passenger survey found 79 per cent of respondents wanted airlines to better enforce carry-on baggage rules.
